‘The rule of law and the search for reason, in the age of populism’
Tim Otty QC of Blackstone Chambers is widely recognised as a leading practitioner in public international law, state and diplomatic immunity, sanctions law, public law and civil liberties and human rights law. In addition to his work at the Bar he is currently the United Kingdom’s representative on the Council of Europe’s European Commission for Democracy through Law and a visiting professor at Kings College London. In 2019 he acted in proceedings in the United States Court of Appeals against Donald Trump and others relating to continued detentions at Guantanamo Bay.
Tim discusses the extremely important role the courts and the law – both here and abroad should play in times of crisis; in safeguarding basic liberties and in protecting minorities, the vulnerable and the marginalised, particularly now, in the age of social media when the scope for misinformation and unchecked abuse of power and influence is so great.
