Using the history of London from Roman times to present-day, recapping topics studied in primary school, this resource by Guildhall Art Gallery and St Paul’s Cathedral for new year 7s explores challenge, resilience, and community. Combine classwork with a visit to complete the experience.
We are mindful of the impact the past year has had on students transitioning from primary to secondary school and would like to take the opportunity to inform you of a project, in which Guildhall Art Gallery and St Paul’s Cathedral are working together to create a special programme for pupils in Year 6 and Year 7.
The aim is to empower students with the skills to help them deal with the transition to their new schools and to reflect upon their recent experience of lockdown and COVID-19. We hope that they will gain confidence and independence as they start the new school year.
Using the history of London from Roman times to present-day we will explore challenge, resilience, and community. Each key period explored will recap curriculum topics students studied in primary school, through a series of creative tasks linked to our collections. The session is cross-curricular; we will address History, Art, RE/RS, Geography, Citizenship, PSHE, and will link to SMSC development.
By the end of the session students will have developed a set of values for their school communities and their city, have considered what thriving communities look like and reflected on the role they want to play in creating their own.
The resources are broken down into 5 short modules and are flexibly designed so that you can fit them into 1-5 lessons as you see best.
We hope that when visiting is possible, you may take up the option to book a visit to both Guildhall Gallery and St Paul’s Cathedral (free of charge) to complete the experience.
